Why is my guitar amplifier not amplifying my guitar’s sound?

Great W asked:

I just changed the strings on my Yamaha electric guitar (ERG 121C). Now, when I hook it up to my amp, it won’t make any sound! What could it be?

*I checked everything. Its all fine, and yes I did use the proper strings. Could it have something to do with the height of my pickups?

OK. I have a few suggestions. Some of them may seem obvious, but I’ll run through them anyway:
Is the amp on?
Is the amp plugged in?
Is the guitar plugged in to the amp?
Is the volume turned up on the guitar AND on the amp?
Are there any effects pedals in between the guitar and the amp? If so, one of them may have a dead battery.
Is you’re cable good? You may want to try another cable.

Worst case, something is broken in either your amp or your guitar, and you could take it to a music store that does repairs and have them take a look.

Good luck!

As you mention changing the strings, forgive me that this seems like a silly idea but you didn’t change the strings to nylon strings did you? Or another irregular kind which wouldn’t be picked up by magnetic pickups.
