Hi, i’m getting into studio recording and I am just a little confused about tubes. What exactly does a tube preamp (for example the universal audio 710 twin-finity) do to vocal recording and how does it benefit. I heard things from other ppl saying, “it makes a huge differance” and “it totally makes the voice sound professional.” I was also told that it gives the voice warmth, wat exactly does that mean? What my understanding is (correct me if im wrong) that the tube technology will make the voice sound fuller and smoother. Please let me know exactly what it does so I will know wether or not I should get the universal audio 710 twin-finity or not ($799).

All microphones need some type of preamp. All it does is amplify the microphone level signal from the mic up to a line level signal.
Both solid state and tube preamps can sound great. Old analog tubes tend to make anything sound a bit smoother (warmer). You really have to hear one to understand. Tubes do not have the frequency response of solid state devices, some people just like that sound better.
My advice would be to try recording without the expensive preamp first and then get one later if you are not happy with the results.
By the way, if you voice does not sound professional without the tube preamp, the preamp will not fix that problem.
Another thing to consider is try one at a music store first with some headphones on and listen to the difference.
