If a Distortion pedal states that it is a class A distortion would it be as good as any other tube preamp?

I’ve seen pedals like the Damage Control Pedals that state it has class A distortion does that mean if I plugged that into an amp with power tubes it’d be able to compete with other amps like Marshalls and Mesas?

They’re basically a tube preamp in a stomp box. The Damage Control has 2 12AX7 tubes just like the preamp section of a tube amp. In my opinion, they don’t compete with that sweet soulful sound of a Mesa, but those pedals can do a wicked heavily overdriven preamp sound like you’d use in Metal stuff.
The pedal takes care of all the distortion, so you could feed it into a solid state or tube amp depending on the sound you’re looking for.

It should sound better than other pedals, but will not sound as good as or better than a Marshall or Mesa. There’s no getting around the fact that a pedal will never replace or recreate the sound of a good tube amp.
