The Marshall DSL 401 is a pretty good amplifier by itself. Applying a tube preamp to a crappy MG250DFX won’t do a lot of good. The tube preamp will add a significant amount of input gain, and will cause the preamp of your MG250DFX to clip. Unfortunate that Grant Fidelity doesn’t give many useful specifications on their web page, so I can’t say for certain how bad it would be. I know it’s more expensive, but I would go for the DSL 401.
Juliepoo, having a tube output will not give you better tone. It is unfortunate that many people believe that tube output sections are better. A well designed solid state output section can sound very good, and will provide more power, better reliability, lower heat, and be lighter and more portable. Most solid state outputs are cheaply made (such as the MG250DFX), but I have built many solid state output section that sounds phenomenal.
tube output stage is best for tone, tube preamp is ok, but without tubes on the output, it’s a waste.
