Marantz SR8001 vs Denon 4308 Amplifier?

Leung asked:

I want an amp with two HDMI output for TV and projector.

Denon’s price is 2x of Marantz at least. Is it real much better?

Denon’s amp has all new technology like HDMI 1.3a, does it really look much better? I’ve a SHARP G7 series. (I’m not sure the HDMI version). I’ve a Panasonic PT-AE1000E or Epson EMP-TW1000 (not yet decided). What should I choose? Should I wait for Denon’s amp?

What real benefit for spending 2x more? I’ve only got 5.1 instead of 7.1 surround sound.

Denon is known for using amplifiers for each channel. Where as most manufacturers use only one shared amp or set of shared amps. This is why they tend to be more spendy for their recievers. If that is not an issue for you, IE: performance, then you can always spend your money wisely on a shared amp model that may do more for your money.

Marantz has been in the business for a while too. They have some great models as you have mentioned here. They usually get a fair price for good quality products.

I’d go with the Panasonic as they’ve been around longer and have a better reputation for their products. Epson was primarily a printer manufacturer, until recently.

You could wait for the newer Denon model, but it may cost more than you might be willing to spend.

I’d check out Yamaha’s web sight for 7.1 models. Google: “Yamaha 7.1-channel digital home theater receiver” as their web sight has changed.

Of course it all depends upon the spec’s you are looking for and how much you have or are willing to spend. $500.00 is an average “reasonable” price as you may know or what it sounds like you are seeking.

The reason I suggest the Yamaha line is that they also have a 9.1 channel flagship model. Although expensive, it Rocks!
But that is only if money is no object! ($4,495.00).

My suggestion is that you go to a stereo supplier and review your models in their sound room. Gather info on them to make an informed decision. Look at cost and performance as well as hook-ups for your needs, (HDMI, are you utilizing your computer in this set up? Also, if you want/need satellight radio, TV/Monitor hook-up types and finally, your budget).

PS: I have a 5.1 Denon hooked up to 11.1 speaker system and it Rocks great! Although I’d love a 7.1 system or better, my budget cannot do it right now.

Unless your TV / Projector supports HDMI 1.3, it makes no difference for video.
It does make big difference for audio - with HDMI 1.3 you can have DTS HD and DOLBY HD, new UNCOMPRESSED audio formats available on HD and Blu-Ray DVDs - they sound unbelievable!

It all comes down to sound quality. What is your source. What speakers do you have. Most mid priced Receivers sound about the same. The greatest compromise in a Receiver is the use of a single power supply for all three sections (the Pre-Amp,Power Amp and Tuner) The needs of the Power Amp section AFFECT the Pre-Amp section. The result is a Receiver is not as smooth, effortless, open and full sounding as a separate Pre-Amp/ Processor and Power Amp (s)
So choose the one that sounds best to you..
