How do I setup a network with crossover adapters?

crossover network
RSJ asked:

I’m sorry for the bombardment of information, but me and my Stepdad have been trying each and every combination for getting our network to work.
We need to connect the broaband from our main (this) computer to a computer in another room. We have an ADSL cable going from one room to the other, both connected through the ‘Ethernet’ socket. Is the Ethernet the right one?

We are currently using a USB crossover adapter with most recent drivers, connected to the main computer. Is this alright?

Network setup worked on the main computer, not the other. It seems to have stopped working now.

Could somebody tell me which computer to connect the crossover adapter to, and any other networking procedures? We never had problems at our old house.

Thank you for reading. :) We have a broadband router connected to our main computer. But do we have to connect cables there?
Or do you mean two routers? They’re expensive, and we never needed one last time.

i dont think an eternet cable works…
u need to get a router.
ill advise a netgear router..
that way, you can share internet connection between computers.

It is MUCH easier to have a router and then two cables coming from that router to the two workstation boxes via internal ethernet cards. After connections are made you would go into the DSL program ( I had to set password 0000 on the modem, password for the program, the Internet provider name, the account password they gave us) and let the computer pick the IP address each time automatically. Automatic IP is in the Network settings in Windows.

Get one computer working from the router and you know the other computer will work from the next connection at the router.

From the wall –> phone-in/DSL –> LAN (router) splits –>BoxA / BoxB

I know the crossover and that is for computer-to-computer with fixed IP addresses like 255.255.125.

Get one computer going at the router. Call the internet company if you can’t connect the 2nd one.

You most definitely want a router for multiple reasone. the first one you are looking at is to get multiple computers on the broadband internet. that says “get a router”
It is also important to have the router for hardware firewall security.
With router you can hook up many computers and printers and even wireless if you buy a wireless router.

You do not want cross-over cables for a router. On the standard 4 wire routers (the cable has 8 wires) the router depending upon brand can determine if you have used a cross-over cable, but it is much slower.

The router is the perfect way to network your computers.

Routers today are $35 if you buy an expensive one.
You should be able to pick up a low end router on-line for under $20. I live in CA near Fry’s and can get them anytime for about $15.

They also have a web site at Frys.com or Outlook.com (the same store.

But there are many other stores on the internet and eBay could get you a real low cost router.

By the way, if you think you may go to wireless, they are not much more expensive and you could purchase that now and not turn the wireless port on.
