Bo Jangles asked:

12″ kicker L7 wired at 4 ohms 750w rms gonna get a JBL GTO 1201.1 specs for amp look down. Will my sub be able this amp also gonna be easy on the gain. Also i have a cheap 5g schoche wire kit from walmart package says 700w rms and 1400max will this wore be ok for this amp is ok if the wire is a little smaller than what it needs to be will it hurt the amp or just what it puts out for power? Also i have a 1995 ram 1500 with a 120amp alt will i need to do the big 3 for this amp?

JBL GTO1201.1
12dB per octave electronic crossover
~ RCA low-level inputs
~ Full-range preamp outputs
~ Variable bass boost circuit for optimized system response
~ 787 watts RMS x 1 @ 4 ohms
~ 1114 watts RMS x 1 @ 2 ohms 14.4V supply
~ Dynamic Power 1339 watts at 2 ohms
~ Damping Factor: 6.348 at 4 ohms
~ Frequency Response: 10Hz - 302Hz
~ Maximum Input Signal: 6.1V
~ Variable electronic crossover and bass-boost
also my ground wire is smaller than my power should i fix that?

Amp will work good with sub.

You will want to upgrade your wire though, go with a name brand 4 gauge wire. Can only think of Stinger and Kicker wire at the top of my head.

Yeah it will. I ‘d say you can turn up your gain 2/3’s way,but I never take mine passed a 1/4.If I need more,I get a bigger system.Monster cables work great also. Check out cardicountsteres.com for products and prices, then check locally if you can get those products and or prices similar. As far as you ground goes, what gauge is it? That’s what matters,I run my ground no more then 2 guages smaller than my pos.Schoche isn’t a brand of wire I’ve used, but they may work as long as you’re not high end all the time. If you’re worried about charging, get a 1/2 cap- a full cap with that set up,that’s all you need,1/2 cap really if you get a good one,or go to walmart and buy the biggest they have,1 1/2 is what they sell where I live.

JBL amps from what I’ve heard are nice. That amp will put out enough power to that sub. I’m assuming you have the dual 2ohm version? As far as the 5 ga. wire I’d go bigger. At least 4 awg. Look at the link below jbl has a chart for the recommended wire and 4 awg is assuming you are only running 10 feet lengths. Personally you could go bigger if you’d like. That amp pulls 115 amps so you need an amp wire kit that corresponds to that. The second link i posted below is a kicker 1/0 kit for under 80 bucks shipped to your door. Last I heard though onlinecarstereo doesn’t have them in stock. You won’t find them cheaper than that though from what I’ve been able to find. The amp has 3 40amp fuses so 120 amps is the most the amp will pull. I’d say you need to at least do the big 3 don’t bother with a capacitor. The money spent likely wouldn’t help your electrical system like changing out your big 3 would and you should be able to do the big 3 with less money. Have any other questions feel free to ask me.

Make dam sure you bought the dual 4ohm version or else your sub wont get enough power. Why? the amp put out about 1200 watts @ 2ohms. So if you wire you dual 4 in parallel you get 2 ohms and everyone is happy. If you bought the dual 2 you just f’d up. Use at the very least 4guage wire.

Power and ground should be the same size.

If your total system power is a 1000 watts RMS or more you will need to:

1. Upgrade the alternator to a high output alternator
2. Upgrade to a heavy duty deep cycle battery
3. Upgrade the “Big 3″ - that is to replace the power wire between the battery and alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis and the ground strap from the engine/tranny to the chassis with at least 1/0 AWG wire.

Failure to do this will result in you replacing them anyway as the alternator will eventually fail.

Here is a guide that will calculate what size alternator and power wires you need as well how to set the gain

You’ll need Microsft Excel to use it.

A second battery is never a good idea as it’s just an added strain on the alternator unless you plan on running the system with the engine off.

A cap is only good so far as the audio system isn’t trying to pull too much from the electrical system. A cap doesn’t provide more power, it’s designed to ’stiffen’ the voltage to the amp, nothing esle. If the current isn’t there, a cap won’t help.
